Having control over the resource use of a process has a significant impact on people’s motivation to be environmentally conscious. As a result, designing products that allow users to adjust how they use them is crucial for helping them make more sustainable choices. This is particularly true in a context where the washing machine is the most important home appliance. In our research with 19 middle-income households in Loughborough, UK; Bangalore, India and Curitiba, Brazil we observed, conducted in-context interviews and used household tours to understand people’s relationship with their laundry appliances.
